| Description | This photographic post card shows the North Main Street, Williamsburg home of William Avery Hawks. Advocates for culture and refinement, Mr. Hawks and his second wife Annie Juliet (Jones) founded the Williamsburg Library Association, which purchased a collection of books that were housed in the Hawks home and lent to members of the Association. The picture, mounted as you see it here, and the accompanying typescript and signed note were given to the Meekins Library by Clara Bodman Hawks, youngest of the Hawks children, who was born in Williamsburg, graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1909, and taught school in Palmer, Mass., Rockville, Conn., and Springfield, Mass. for many years. It is unknown who subsequently crossed out several words of her message or who added the note about the house's later ownership. The post card is 3.25 x 5.5 inches and the page is 8.5 x 11 inches. |
