| Description | The cartoon image depicts a wounded soldier and two other soldiers being served a hot drink by a man in uniform emerging from a YMCA trench dugout with the title "an oasis near hell" and the caption "to cool a dusty throat: to bring a bit of home to weary ones". The Red Triangle, the YMCA's official symbol since 1897, became a welcome sight to the battle weary soldier during World War I. The Young Men's Christian Association supported the armed forces on the French battlefields during the war by providing food, books, music, religious instruction, organized choirs and bands to help maintain the body, mind, and spirit of the soliders as well as all prisoners-of-war. |
