| Description | The manufacturing plant of the Hamilton Woolen Company is shown, including the six story brick mill that was originally built in 1836. Located in the Globe Village section, the Hamilton Woolen Company operated in Southbridge, incorporated in 1831, with a capital of $200, 000, one half to be invested in real, and one half in personal estate. In 1839, the company was authorized to increase their capital $100, 000 in real, and $200, 000 in personal estate. Additionally, in 1846, they were further authorized to increase their capital stock to an amount not to exceed one million dollars. The amount of capital paid in, as reported in 1856, is $600, 000 divided into shares of $100. In the year 1872, the business experienced its greatest success. The company started a newsletter, called "The Hamiltonian". The first issue was published on January 1, 1920. |
