| Description | View of two stores at the east side of the Chapin Block on Hamilton Street, at the corner of Crane Street, Southbridge. The building acquired the name Flat Iron due to its shape. Built by Franics Luther (F. L.) Chapin and Mr. Cheney as a commercial emporium. Some detail of the shingle and clapboard siding with the dentil work is provided. Sign for M. L. Brainard, Watchmaker & Jeweler, sign for Optician on the glass of one of the store fronts, announce some of the business ventures operating in the building. A man and boy are standing in the doorway to the Optician's store. The sign in the window states "Gold Rings, Gold Pens, Fountain Pens." In front are some hitching posts for horses, at the side of the curb. When in operation, the Southbridge Sturbridge Street Railway used to pass in front of this building. A glimpse of one of the houses on Crane Street is provided. In 2004, the Flat Iron building was refurbished. |
