DescriptionPictured in the summer of 1897, this one story domestic dwelling was the birthplace of James J. (J.J.) Oakes, postmaster and dry goods store owner. The South Street property has clapboard siding with a shingle roof and two chimneys. The three step main entrance is accessible on two sides. A pile of wood is gathered on the grass verge in front of the residence. The top of a windmill is shown in the background, in back of the house. A low stone wall adjoins the annex. The road is unpaved. Trees surround the sides of the house. This residence is reputedly one of the oldest houses in Southbridge.
