| Description | Triangular view of the Hartwell building on the corner of Main and Central Streets. Both facades have flat belt signage announcing "Drugs and Medicines". Built in 1867, George H. Hartwell operated an apothecary from this premises, at 98 Main Street and 1 Central Street. A balcony is located over the main entrance to the store front. The traditional mortar and pestle sign, indicating a pharmacy, is attached to the balcony. This architectural element is no longer in place. Retractable striped awnings are on some of the windows. Many men are shown, wearing suits and hats. The adjacent building is a brick structure with arched windows and retractable awnings. There are shop fronts on the lower level. A sign for "Jos. Bebo" hangs perpendicular to the building, where "Ales Wines and Liquors" is also on display. The New Tremont Theatre operated out of this building, at one time; as did the Salvation Army. Other structures are shown in the distance. Corner of the C.A. Dresser House is visible, on right side. Electricity poles are one each side of the street going in a northerly direction on Central Street. Part of the trolley car track is visible in the foreground, in the dirt road. |
