DescriptionTwo sisters, Mary Alice Roper (b. 1904-03-07) and Julia Adeline Roper (b. 1905-06-24) were born in Princeton, Massachusetts. They were the daughters of William Marshall Roper, Jr. and Julia Alice (Bennett) Roper (m. 1901-10-08). William operated a sawmill, Roper Lumber & Box Co., that primarily produced chair stock with his father and brother for many years. The mill was located in 'Slab City', on West Wachusett Brook near the intersection of Hubbardston Road in West Princeton. They also threshed grain and had a gristmill. The family owned 11 tenements and controlled 1600 acres of timberland in Princeton, Rutland and Hubbardston by 1915. Julia was a teacher in Princeton.
